MODAL
|
The generic term man made fibers which today in German language comprises both synthetic and cellulosic man made fibres unfortunately creates a classification which distinguishes between viscose and modal fibres with their natural properties and natural fibres in an insufficient manner.
Modal is a Cellulose regenerated fiber of the high wet modulus type. The fiber is manufactured according to a special viscose spinning process from high quality wood pulp. Fibers made of Modal display a silky gloss, which produces a shine similar to mercerization when blended with cotton, a pleasant soft touch and drape and excellent wear properties.

Brief History: Modal
Of the different possibilities to dissolve and spin cellulose the method developed by English men Cross bad Bevan became most popular and was the method adopted by Lenzing. During the first World War with shortage of raw material viscose manufacturer discovered that it was possible not only to produce filament fibers but also by cutting the fibers into short staples, to create a substitution product for cotton. The viscose staple fibers continued to be recognized substitute for cotton until the second World War. Considerable improvements to the fibre , which Lenzing make boosted fibre prestige leading to its classification as a distinct species.

Manufacturing-Modal
Sodium hydroxide is added in the pulp. This is called steeping process, in which, impurities are removed, extra liquor is pressed off and shredding follows. Shreds are shifted to pre-aging vessel, in next stage called xanthation carbon disulfide , dissolving liquor and dissolving water is added, a strong dissolution is done by high power mixer, when there is complete dissolution solution is filtered and store for ripening to get a certain level of viscosity. De-aeration of solution insures homogeneity of solution. Solution is passed through a spinneret to get filaments.
